Today is the first World Saltmarsh Day! Here’s why we’re celebrating them 👇 They’re incredible coastal wetland habitats. Filled and drained by the tides, creating a unique watery mosaic of salt-tolerant plants, creeks, pools and grasses, home to a vast array of wildlife. 🦆🌿 Historically seen as unproductive and drained for use as agricultural land, or squeezed by static sea defences we are working hard to bring these habitats back. These dynamic habitats are vital to many species, from birds and fish to invertebrates, mammals and even amphibians. Sadly, 85% of England’s saltmarshes have been lost since 1860, but there is hope for their return.
