In 1954, Antigone Costanda of Egypt made history by being crowned as the first African Miss World, and the first Miss World to come from a Muslim-majority country. Born in Nicosia, Cyprus of Greek parents, Antigone was raised in Egypt. She won the Miss Egypt contest in 1953 and was supposed to compete in Miss World that year, but she was unable to and was replaced by her first runner-up Marina Papaelia.
